Overview of Visian ICL

EVO Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is a vision correction procedure designed to reduce nearsightedness (myopia) and, with a toric lens, astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, which reshapes the cornea, EVO ICL involves placing a biocompatible lens inside the eye, behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. The procedure preserves the cornea's natural shape and may be an option for patients with higher prescriptions, thin corneas, or other factors that make laser vision correction less suitable.

Who Is a Good Candidate for EVO ICL?

EVO ICL is FDA-approved for adults ages 21 to 60 who meet specific vision and eye health requirements. Candidates typically have moderate to high myopia, with or without astigmatism.

Factors considered when determining eligibility include:

  • A stable vision prescription for at least one year.

  • Nearsightedness within the treatment range, generally between -3.00 and -20.00 diopters.

  • Adequate space inside the eye to safely accommodate the implanted lens.

  • Healthy corneal endothelial cells and suitable eye anatomy.

  • No disqualifying conditions, such as certain forms of glaucoma, or current pregnancy or breastfeeding.

A comprehensive eye examination, including detailed measurements of the eye, is necessary to determine whether EVO ICL is appropriate.

How Is EVO ICL Surgery Performed?

EVO ICL is an outpatient procedure that typically takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes per eye. Before surgery, numbing eye drops are administered to minimize discomfort. Mild sedation may also be offered.

The surgeon creates a small incision near the edge of the cornea and inserts the folded lens into the eye. The lens is then carefully positioned behind the iris, where it works with the natural lens to focus light more accurately onto the retina.

The EVO ICL design includes a central opening that allows fluid to circulate naturally within the eye, generally eliminating the need for the preliminary laser procedure required with earlier ICL models.
